Seattle ACS conducted an Emergency Field Communications Exercise on Saturday, April 29 0900 – 1200. This event was part of the regularly scheduled Statewide 5th Saturday Drill. ACS demonstrated and tested various communications capabilities and paths within the city, between sector radio posts and with other Emcomm teams and jurisdictions. Primary objectives included operating in the field using temporary shelter and emergency power sources, testing the ability to communicate between neighborhood radio posts and the Seattle EOC without using radio repeaters that could be damaged in a disaster as well as using high frequency (HF) or short wave systems to connect locally as well as with EOCs and ACS teams outside the area. Additionally, the exercise plan called for using the North Seattle College radio room as a back-up EOC, a good test should the City EOC be damaged or inaccessible.
A total of 46 ACS team members participated in the drill setting up six sector radio posts across the city and staffing North Seattle College. Messaging took place on and off amateur radio infrastructure and included both voice and e-mail based messaging with attachments.
