Ham Radio Representation at “GeekGirlCon” – October 9, 2016

GeekGirlCon (www.geekgirlcon.com) is an annual event held in downtown Seattle whose mission is to “celebrate and honor the legacy of women contributing to science and technology, comics, arts, literature, and game play and game design by connecting geeky women worldwide and creating community to foster continued growth of women in geek culture through events.” This will be the sixth year for this convention; last year (I was told) they got 3,000 attendees.  It’s held at the Conference Center, 8th and Pike, across the street from the Convention Center.

The West Seattle Amateur Radio Club will have a table this year in the “GeekGirlConnections” area of the convention. I’m soliciting volunteers to staff the table.  Because GeekGirlCon is focused on providing role models for young women and girls in the STEM fields (among other things) I’m asking for female ham radio representation.

“The Connections area . . . exists in order to create a space for like-minded community organizations, leaders, and producers to share their experience and work within our community. It is focused on leadership development, mentorship, and connecting women with professionals in their desired career fields.”

Ham radio is clearly a perfect match!

Our table at GeekGirlConnections will have three areas: one, a small display of equipment; two, information and materials on how to get licensed and other ham resources (such as Ham Radio for Dummies, publications from the ARRL); and three, an area in which public service activities of the ham radio community can be highlighted, including the KUOW piece and the ARRL Public Service publication.

We will have our table on Sunday, October 9th, from 9:30 – 5:00.  I hope to staff three shifts with two to three volunteers each:  9:00 – 12:00; 12:00 – 3:00; and 3:00 – 6:00.  Memberships will be provided (I have some two-day memberships; the rest are Sunday-only.)

If you are available to staff the Ham Radio/Amateur Radio Service/WSARC table at GeekGirlCon in October, please email me, Susan Matthews, KF7RTF, with your contact information and which shift(s) you would be available to work.  My email address is foxndrgn@comcast.net; my phone number is 206-323-1959; and I also attend the Monday evening WSARC net, the Monday evening ACS net, and the Tuesday evening Western Washington Red Cross Disaster Technology net.

Any questions, comments, and suggestions (but most of all volunteering!) please let me know. I hope you get as excited about this opportunity to reach this audience of young female techno-geeks as I am, and hope to hear from you!
